A Few Reasons Why to Grow Your Own Produce

Posted by tamara under: Garden; Learn.

Two articles on salmonella

Adding to tomato confusion, the government is about to start testing numerous other types of fresh produce in the hunt for the source of the nation’s record salmonella outbreak — even as it insists tomatoes remain the leading suspect.

Virginia Planting Guide

Posted by tamara under: Garden.

I’ve been getting email about the growing season in Virginia and if it was feasible to install raised beds so late in the season. Unlike most states, Virginia is in the middle and its possible to get two or more full crops by planting in the spring and in the fall.

Here is an easy planting guide CLICK HERE

We are actually able to extend this even longer and to grow more variety by covering the beds with domes to create a greenhouse affect.

Home Services 4 U & Your Pet

Posted by tamara under: News.

Many people have asked about fencing, dog decks, houses and dog doors. We now have a person that can build it all including animal pens & stalls. We can even come in and deck your house out with dog door, decking, fencing and even automated feeders and waters. Some people are automating pet care for more freedom. Instead of paying for pet sitting 2-3 times a day, we can come by once a day to make sure everyone is ok.

In addition they can also provide other home services inside and out- install gutters, decks, fix outlets, light plumbing, painting, debris removal, repair and install doors, windows, lights, alarms, plant irrigation, fencing and much more. No job too big or small. Call or email me for the number.

Oddjob, Cherry, Piper & Riley - The Fantastic Four

Posted by tamara under: Doggie Profiles.

These are 4 perfect dogs. Oddjob (Golden Retriever) & Cherry (Boarder  Collie) live together.  Oddjob LOVES to play fetch  so anytime a human is present he gets the ball and brings it to you. He could do this  50 times a day, I’m sure. Cherry is very affectionate and sweet.

The two mixes Riley & Piper live together and are here for an extended stay. As you can see in the first part of the video Piper is very vocal! I have tired to get video of these two for several weeks which is almost impossible as you’ll see in the second half of the video. They NEVER stay still when there is a human around. They love to play and are very affectionate. Piper is a lap dog and Riley loves to lay her head on your lap and get kissed all over her face.

All four dogs are excellent dogs.

Land 4 Sale Update

Posted by tamara under: Land For Sale.

I’ve taken a few videos of the land being offered for sale at Dancing Creek Farm. The farm is located in Pittsylvania County outside Danville, Virginia. It is 45 min North of Greensboro, NC - 1 hour to the Blue Ridge Parkway. This is a very desirable area to live because of the district, being in the county and West of Danville. In fact this location places you almost between Danville and Martinsville.

Map of Dancing Creek Farm:434-685-1673 244 W Fork Rd Cascade, VA 24069, US

1 acre cleared and excavated - has driveway from road, nice and ready to build with a wonderful slope in the back for a great view. No mobile homes on this property. Price $18K

10 acres w/ LONG road frontage along Whispering Pines located in Brosville- Tunstall District of the county. Part cleared, part woods, year around creek at the bottom. Mobile homes ok. 65K

Owner Financing considered on larger parcels with down payment of 25%

See videos for details. Below is a DOC that has an image on it showing the total shape and size of the entire 25 acres. The purple shading shows the flood zone which extends from the creek. These areas can not be built on, however in 3 years and heavy flooding in VA have not seen the creek reach that high, ever.

Grow Your Own Food Fast & Healthy ~ Year Around!

Posted by tamara under: Garden.

peppereggplant.jpgzucini.jpg

Above left Peppers and Eggplant - Right zucchini & Yellow Squash

There are many advantages in using raised beds for growing. One of the biggest factors is air. Most soils, especially clay, don’t offer enough drainage and air to the root system. When using raised beds you can mix the proper growing mix for what you want to grow. In my case I use a combination of organic mediums such as peat moss, manure, top soil & if a lot of drainage is needed we’ll add sand.

Another advantage is there is going to be a lot less weeding. Having a raised bed doesn’t mean completely weed free.  Seeds blow in and travel into your beds, however it is sufficiently less work then gardens grown in the ground.

Stumpy & Pablo

Posted by tamara under: Doggie Profiles.

stumpy.jpgpablo.jpg

These two live together and came to visit Dancing Creek Farm. Stumpy is one of those specialty breeds, sort of a mix between a basset hound and shitzu. Very interesting look and a really sweet dog. Pablo is obvious a Chihuahua only about a 1 year and ADORABLE! They are both males.  The video below is actually several clips combined. In the first part you can see Stumpy smiling. Its the funniest thing! You then see them looking out the screen door, their favorite past time, watching the roosters, hens and just checking everything out.  You’ll then see Pablo stiff and looking like he’s crying when actually he LOVES sitting in the warm sun but its so bright and he also starts to get sleepy. I was spying on him on the back sun deck, sitting there and I saw him start to fall asleep, nodding out while sitting up! It was so funny. Sometimes the video camera isn’t there when you need it.

Goat Meat 4 Dogs - Low Fat, High Protein & Natural

Posted by tamara under: Dog Health.

If you can buy goat meat, even older goats and someone that processes it, you can feed your dogs goat meat. Its lower in fat then even chicken and higher in protein then beef! No kidding! Older goats are not sold as much due to the meat being more tough, however your dogs teeth can easily chew it and if you are having the goat processed you can request it all ground. After processing you can get your meat down to around 3.50 a pound.

We all know the nightmares of commercial dog food and a simple search will show you that most are filled with ingredients that are unsafe for human consumption so why would you feed your dog this?

Natural Produce & Farm Fresh Products

Posted by tamara under: Farm Fresh Products.

greenhouse.jpg

This year/season we will be growing all kinds of fresh natural produce. We don’t use pesticides and most fertilizers are organic.  I do admit that I use miracle Gro a few times. Everything else is organic.

If you are interested in produce during the season please contact us using the form. We are seeking customers interested in weekly or bi-weekly pick-ups. We haven’t worked out all the details, however we are taking this year to figure out a few things and looking for a handful of steady customers that want a great deal and can pick up out at the farm. We are talking to several other farms we may buy farm fresh canned foods from that you can pick up here as well. Please also add your name to our newsletter.

Dog Gas - ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

Posted by tamara under: Dog Health.

My rottie, Bear, will clear a room in no time flat! I have been sleeping and awakened by his gas! Its embarrassing when people come over and the whole house smells like awful. I try lighting incense, burning candles but nothing takes away that smell. There are days where he does this all day and often I would hear his stomach making nosies as he lied there ripping one after another. I know he must have been uncomfortable. I searched on the internet and of course there are toms of very expensive supplements for you and your pets. With 4 dogs, 2 large, I just can’t afford some of this and still feed them a good dog food.

Dogs anatomy is much like our own. This is why when you go to the vet they will prescribe human grade antibiotics, etc. In fact if you have a healthy diet- low fat, low sugars/carbs, your dog could easily eat exactly what you eat. So I researched this in humans and how to naturally help gas. YOGURT!  Let me give that a try! I can buy a large plain container at Sam’s (must have active cultures like Yoplait ) for under 2.00. It works great and they LOVE it too.  In fact I use to add a little bit of wet food to the dry to get them to eat all at once but now I add a tablespoon of yogurt to each meal.  Yogurt has many benefits for dogs and humans. An even better probiotic is cultured milk called Keffir, however it is normally quite a bit more expensive.  Any active culture yogurt should work quite well.

Research results have been mixed when it comes to the relationship between yogurt cultures and immune function, yeast infections and lowered risk of certain cancers. Animal studies suggest that yogurt with active starter cultures and probiotics may enhance certain immune functions. …. read more of this article here

Joint Pain Dogs & People

Posted by tamara under: Dog Health.

200.jpg

Most of my dogs are older and suffered from joint pain. I lost my lab, Little Man because of kidney failure after years of being on medication that took a toll on his organs. Much later I had read about  glucosamine and decided to try it on myself and my dogs. At first I started purchasing joint juices and joint pills and some of them worked pretty well, however they were so expensive and it was myself and 2 dogs taking it. While searching at Walmart I found this unflavored powder that combine gelatin and glucosamine.  It works great!  You simple put a scoop in your baby’s dog food once a day. It takes about 2 months before you start to see a difference but you will.  It works great for humans too suffering from joint pain and Arthritis.

You can buy this at Walmart, however I found it the cheapest (12 buck!) here online and you can set up automatic delivery making it super easy!  CLICK HERE

I also give my dogs one fish oil caplet per day which I think not only helps with over-all bone health but great for their skin and Omega-3 fatty acids help maintain heart and vascular health.  You can spend a lot of money for the exact same thing. I found it HERE 5.19 for 173 softgels. You can poke it with a pin and squeeze the smelling fish oil on their food which they LOVE or most dogs will just eat the pill mixed right in their food.

Joint help requires a good health system for you and your dog. Supplements alone will not work as well. Get out and move around with your dog. Take a daily walk. Even 20 min a day is great and will do you both a world of good. Go down to the riverwalk at Dan River, its lovely, a few times a week, enjoy nature, walk and meet new friends!  If you need a walking buddy email me and I’ll let you know the days we are down there walking.

My pet pigs, Elmer and lilly, talking to me, the inside of my barn which also shows the chicken coop we made for laying hens. That coop has a totally enclosed outside area. Alaska, the white lab mix, has been here before and a sweet little girl. This was Maggies first time. She’s a 3 year old pointer that was fascinated with all the animals on the farm. When I took her out on a leash in the front she could smell or sense the deer in the pastur, point her tail and lift her leg. Thank goodness she was on a leash. In the video below Maggie is wanting the chickens in the front yard so she is jumping up and down trying to look out the windows in the door. Very funny. In the winter when its slow I keep dogs in the main house with me. During the night they somehow got the boxes of treats off the dining table and had a party! I’m honestly surprised they didn’t get a tummy ache. There were wrappers EVERYWHERE but not one single treat left!   They are very affectionate.

Winter Updates - Dog Boarding & More

Posted by tamara under: News.

We had a busy holiday! Now that winter and a New Year is here it will be slow the next few months. We are still boarding dogs but you should try to call ahead of time. When its slow we often take mini trips. just give us a call and see if we’re around. 434-685-1673, however email is always a FASTER way to get me. I admit that I’m really bad about checking voicemail but always check email.

This spring and summer we expect to be even busier then last. Starting Feb you should book ahead. We hope to expand this year and put stables in for horse boarding. We would also like to put some facilities in for people to come out and spend a day or a few hours with their dogs. Its a great way to meet friends and let your dog have some fun with others. Make sure you’re on our mailing list for updates.

Happy New Year & thank you for your business!
